Multitasking has become second nature among numerous individuals owing to technological advancements coupled with jam-packed schedules. From cooking meals whilst staying updated with news bulletins or responding to emails whilst engaged in conversations over the phone – many people see this approach as indispensable.

However, the act of multitasking is often misunderstood due to its negative implications that are detrimental towards one’s productivity, efficacy and overall health. In this blog post we aim to demystify the notion of multitasking whilst endorsing tactics for focused performance by emphasizing on completing tasks one at a time.

What exactly is Multitasking?

The practice of multitasking has become ingrained within our culture; yet have you ever considered why people undertake this approach?

Multitasking consists of executing multiple activities simultaneously like texting while having lunch meetings or checking social media amidst working on projects. Although it could appear to be an effective technique to accomplish tasks, multitasking is a misconception.

People that multitask a lot, experience reduced productivity and lower quality work output than those who devote their attention solely to one distinct activity at a time.

Research has underscored that human brain capacity does not allow for effective proficiency while taking up various chores at once; rather our cognitive abilities shift from one task to another regularly which eventually dilutes concentration towards any concentrated effort by an individual in his/her work schedule or other pursuits. Moreover refocusing after switching between different tasks also consumes valuable mental energy resulting in subpar outcomes easily observable throughout a variety of activities.

For instance, a research led by Stanford University revealed that people who attempted to multitask had a harder time concentrating and were overall less productive than people who focused on one task at a time.

For roles that require acute concentration and unwavering attention spans, attempting to multitask can have serious downsides. This is particularly evident when dealing with complicated undertakings like programming assignments in the software development sphere. If one attempts to undertake several tasks at once such as replying to emails or chatting with colleagues while coding, it could lead to wastage of valuable time and hinder speedy project completion.

How to Concentrate on One Task at a Time

While multitasking may appear enticing, the reality is that focusing on one job at a time is far more successful and helpful. Here are some techniques for concentrating on one subject at a time:

Tasks should be prioritized

Prioritizing your chores is one of the most efficient techniques to focus on one thing at a time. Determine which tasks are the most critical and prioritize them. Once those duties are finished, go to the next most important duty. Prioritizing your duties allows you to focus on the most critical things first, avoiding the urge to multitask. If possible, get a note pad or scheduler and note the exact things you need to do and when.

Using Time Management techniques

Maximizing our productivity requires us to positively tweak our working habits- beginning with incorporating practical time management techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique in our daily routines.

The Pomodoro technique is easy to implement -you’ll work for twenty-five minutes then take brief breaks in-between tasks as needed. By implementing this systematic approach towards completing tasks, you’ll enforce discipline on yourself while focusing on one job at a given ‘Pomodoro’ interval-this builds consistency over time resulting in increased efficiency. Eliminate Distractions

Distractions often pose as an obstacle towards optimal output levels when working within an environment with many possible disruptions. Thus, it might be advantageous if one closes all email applications, turns off their phones and even shuts their office door so as to maximize their concentration levels. The result could lead to optimal delivery levels for the given task-at-hand by focusing without any barriers

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness involves being aware of the present moment with focus and intentionality. It fosters concentration by allowing us to evade diversions and focus on individual tasks at hand. To pick up this skill, find yourself a quiet haven and concentrate on your breathing without any interruptions. While it happens quite often for thoughts to stray off, simply guide them back tenderly.

On my own way, I find a quite place, a place that has less people in it. I make use of my ear plugs to block/reduce the noise from the outside.
